UK Broadens Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Warning Roster with Eleven Nations
British government has placed an additional eleven more nations to its public alert list about the dangers of industrial alcohol toxicity from adulterated spirits.
This expanded travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of methanol contamination.
Just recently, authorities had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, after several serious events like the fatal death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can result in blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hours.
Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?
Methanol is a harmful industrial alcohol often employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. It is not intended for human consumption.
Although it is generated during the creation of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the distillation process.
Yet in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.
